Maple News reports that Alberta is preparing to open a new immigration pathway under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), designed specifically for law enforcement professionals. Set to launch later in 2024, this targeted Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) stream aims to address officer shortages and strengthen public safety across the province.
The new pathway will offer 50 nomination spots this year for eligible candidates who are qualified and already employed or have a job offer within Alberta’s policing sector. Applicants must meet the federal Express Entry criteria, as the stream is aligned with Canada’s Express Entry system, allowing successful candidates to pursue permanent residency.
According to the Government of Alberta, the program was announced on June 25 to support recruitment efforts within Alberta’s police services and confront growing public safety challenges. Officials highlight a notable drop in interest from local residents in pursuing police careers, contributing to staffing pressures among law enforcement agencies.
To qualify, candidates must have a valid job offer from an employer who is part of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police (AACP). In addition, they must meet all eligibility requirements under the Express Entry system, which includes factors such as language proficiency, education, and professional experience.
Eligible occupations span a variety of law enforcement roles, including commissioned and non-commissioned police officers, police investigators, and other public protection or investigative roles. Specialized law enforcement positions may also qualify under the new stream.
This announcement marks Alberta’s continued use of the AAIP to fill critical labor market needs and bolster public service capacity. The AAIP enables the province to nominate candidates who are well-positioned to contribute to Alberta’s economy and society through pathways tailored to key sectors such as healthcare, technology, and now public safety.
The new law enforcement stream demonstrates the province’s commitment to enhancing local security while also creating new opportunities for skilled international professionals looking to settle permanently in Canada. Further details, including the specific opening date for applications, are expected to be released by the provincial government in the coming months.
