Maple News reports that Canada has extended its ban on direct flights from India until August 21, 2021, as public health authorities continue monitoring the international spread of COVID-19 variants. The ban, first imposed on April 22 alongside Pakistan, suspended all passenger and commercial flights from the two countries due to concerns over the rapid emergence of highly contagious virus strains.
While Canada lifted the flight suspension on Pakistan on June 21, air travel from India remains restricted for now. The decision reflects ongoing caution over India’s epidemiological situation, even as both countries see progress in their vaccination campaigns.
Despite the extended ban, Canada is preparing to relax various travel restrictions for other groups. Starting in August, fully vaccinated tourists will be allowed entry. Additionally, as of June 21, new immigrants with approved Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) documents have been permitted to travel to Canada and complete their landing process. Fully vaccinated travellers are no longer required to quarantine upon arrival.
This easing of border policies coincides with Canada’s significant progress in controlling COVID-19. With nearly 80% of the population vaccinated with at least one dose and over 40% fully vaccinated, the country has seen daily case counts drop dramatically—from a peak of over 9,000 in April to around 400 per day. Many provinces are reopening and loosening social distancing measures as a result.
India is Canada’s top source of both new immigrants and international students. In recent years, Indians have made up about 20% of new permanent residents and 30% of student visa holders. The flight ban poses a temporary hurdle for thousands awaiting travel clearance.
The extension comes at a time when Canada is pursuing its most ambitious immigration targets in history—aiming to welcome over 400,000 newcomers annually. Many of these new residents are former international students who typically integrate well into Canada’s labor market. Programs such as Express Entry and the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) are designed to support their permanent residency transitions by awarding extra points and offering tailored immigration pathways.
While the India flight ban remains in effect for now, Maple News will continue to monitor and report on any new updates as Canada adjusts its border policies in line with evolving public health metrics.
