Maple News reports that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has held its third Express Entry draw of the week, targeting candidates in healthcare occupations. On October 26, 2023, IRCC issued 3,600 invitations to apply (ITAs) for permanent residence to healthcare professionals with a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 431.
This focused draw reflects Canada’s ongoing strategy to attract professionals in critical sectors such as healthcare, addressing growing labor shortages amid an ageing population and increased demand for services. It marks one of several recent category-based draws under Express Entry, signaling IRCC’s efforts to align immigration with Canada’s labor market needs.
Earlier in the week, two other category-specific draws were conducted. On October 24, IRCC invited 1,548 candidates through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)-only draw. The minimum CRS cutoff for this draw was 776, inflated due to the automatic 600 points awarded for a provincial nomination. The following day, October 25, a category-based draw for French-speaking candidates saw 300 individuals invited, with a minimum score of 486.
Since the introduction of category-based selection in mid-2023, IRCC has increasingly tailored draws to address sector-specific needs, such as in STEM, trades, transportation, agriculture, and language proficiency. This strategic approach ensures economic immigration aligns closely with regional and national employment priorities.
Adding to recent policy changes, as of October 1, 2023, Express Entry applicants are no longer required to complete an upfront medical examination (IME) before submitting their application. Candidates may now upload a placeholder document in their application, and IRCC will issue instructions for the IME later. This change simplifies the initial submission process and reduces administrative barriers, especially for those already residing in Canada or who’ve previously undergone an IRCC medical exam.
These back-to-back draws and updated procedures demonstrate IRCC’s commitment to a modernized, responsive immigration system. By frequently inviting qualified individuals through multiple pathways, Canada continues to position itself as a top destination for global talent.
For aspiring immigrants working in high-demand sectors, such as healthcare and technology, the evolving Express Entry system presents timely and targeted opportunities to secure permanent residence in Canada.
